How to Read This Book by Career Stage

The five sections of this book roughly track five different seasons of a career. Read it start to finish if you want the whole arc — or skip straight to the season you're in.

If you're in your first eighteen months of corporate life, start with Section I: The Rules of Corporate Apprenticeship. It's about setting down whatever credential got you in the door, and learning the smaller, unglamorous skills nobody put on the syllabus.

If you're learning how to be mentored, how to carry real exposure before you feel ready for it, or how a specialty finds you before you find it, Section II: The Unscheduled Curriculum is written for that stretch.

If you're stepping into rooms with real stakeholders and real stakes for the first time, Section III: The Geography of the Table is about earning a seat, and then learning that the seat comes with an obligation, not just a view.

If you're managing people or leading a team for the first time, Section IV: The Trusted Advisor is about the weight that shows up with a title — the trade-offs only a leader gets to make, the colleague whose hostility turns out to be history, and the silence that lands harder on the other end than you think it does.

And if you're building or scaling something of your own, Section V: The Institutional Machinery is about what it actually takes — the talent calls no spreadsheet makes for you, the small decisions that quietly become your culture, and the discipline to walk away from work that isn't real.

At the back of the book, a Discussion & Workshop Guide turns each section into a set of questions and a concrete next step — built for team debriefs, book clubs, and leadership cohorts who want to take this further than reading alone.
