Edy Widjaja grew up behind the counter of his parents' nine-square-meter provision shop in Chinatown, West Jakarta, learning to read what a customer needed before they asked for it — a skill that turned out to matter more, three decades later, than almost anything he learned in a classroom.

 

That instinct carried him further than anyone expected: a BSc in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Indonesia, and a PhD in Materials Science from Northwestern, on a path that was supposed to end in a laboratory. It ended instead, almost by accident, in a case interview for an elite global strategy firm's regional office.

Fifteen years later, he had co-founded that firm's Jakarta office, led its Southeast Asia Financial Services practice, and shaped a decade of the region's hiring and mentorship. In 2026, he closed the laptop for the last time to write, travel, and figure out — more slowly than he'd like — who he is without a calendar telling him.
